Personal training for injury prevention in Singapore
Train to become more capable.
You want to keep training, playing sport and doing the activities you enjoy.
But recurring pain, old injuries or repeated setbacks may have made you question how hard to push, which exercises to choose and whether your current programme is actually preparing your body for what you ask it to do.
Darn Good Gym provides structured, one-to-one injury prevention personal training for adults and recreational athletes who want to build strength, improve control and progress without unnecessarily rushing the process.
Assess first. Control before load. Progress according to your current capacity.
For active adults, gym-goers and recreational athletes in Singapore.
For adults who want to train consistently without repeating the same setbacks
Perhaps you have experienced the same problem more than once.
- You increase your running distance and something begins to hurt.
- You return to the gym, progress too quickly and have to stop again.
- You play your sport regularly but do little preparation outside it.
- You feel fine during everyday life, yet your body struggles whenever training becomes faster, heavier or more demanding.
The answer is not to avoid every challenging movement.
It is also not to push through everything and hope your body eventually adapts.
A better approach is to understand your current capacity, build the physical qualities your activities demand and progress the challenge more deliberately.
Being active is valuable. Being prepared matters too.
More people are active. Preparation has not kept pace.
The proportion of Singaporeans reported to exercise at least once a week in 2023 — up from 54% in 2015.

This does not mean strength training can prevent every injury.
Injury risk is influenced by many factors, including previous injury, sport exposure, training volume, fatigue, preparation and circumstances that cannot always be controlled.
But it does show why strength training should be more than an optional extra for people who want to remain active.
The goal is to prepare your body for greater demands — not wait for another setback before taking preparation seriously.
Injury prevention is not about treating your body as fragile
Avoiding every difficult exercise does not necessarily prepare you for real life or sport.
Running involves repeated impact. Racket sports require acceleration and rapid changes of direction. Golf asks you to produce and control rotation. Gym training exposes you to progressively heavier resistance.
Your body needs sufficient capacity for those demands.
At Darn Good Gym, injury prevention personal training focuses on:
- Appropriate exercise selection
- Better control under resistance
- Building general strength
- Gradual exposure to greater demands
- Sensible increases in training volume and difficulty
- Adjusting training when your current capacity changes
- Preparing for the activities you want to keep doing
We do not promise to make your body “injury-proof.”
We help you prepare more thoughtfully.
How the DGG process works
- 1
Assess your starting point
We begin by understanding your training and injury history, recurring problems or previous setbacks, your current exercise routine, the sport or activities you participate in, movements that feel uncertain, and what you want to return to or improve. We then observe a small number of relevant movements to understand your current strength, control and starting capacity.
- 2
Build stronger foundations
Your programme may include fundamental patterns such as squatting and stepping, pushing and pulling, hinging and lifting, carrying, bracing and trunk control, single-leg strength, and controlled deceleration and landing where appropriate. The exercises are selected according to your needs — not because they appear impressive on social media.
- 3
Progress according to your capacity
As your movement control and strength improve, we may gradually increase resistance, range of movement, training volume, exercise complexity, speed or power demands, and activity-specific preparation. Progress is earned through your response to training — not forced according to a rigid timeline.
- 4
Connect your training to what you enjoy
Your gym programme should support your activity without attempting to copy every sporting movement. We build broader physical qualities that may help you better tolerate the demands of running, golf, racket sports, team sports, hiking or regular gym training. Your sports coach remains responsible for developing the technical skills of your sport.
Build strength for the sport and activities you want to keep doing
For runners and cyclists
Build lower-body strength and capacity to support repeated training demands, while managing increases in distance, frequency and intensity more deliberately.
For golf and racket-sport players
Develop strength, control and the ability to produce and manage force through different positions.
For football, basketball and other team-sport players
Prepare for running, accelerating, decelerating, changing direction and repeated efforts.
For gym-goers
Learn how to select, perform and progress exercises without treating soreness, fatigue or heavier weights as the only signs of improvement.
For weekend athletes
Build a level of preparation that better reflects the physical demands you place on your body outside the working week.
The aim is not elite athletic performance unless that is genuinely your goal.
It is to help you become physically better prepared for the activities that matter to you.
Personal training with old or recurring injuries
A previous injury does not automatically mean you must avoid loading that area forever.
But it also does not mean every exercise or level of training is currently suitable.
Where you have already been medically assessed and are appropriate for personal training, we can help you:
- Return to structured strength training
- Rebuild capacity after inactivity
- Progress beyond basic rehabilitation exercises
- Train around relevant limitations
- Become less dependent on random exercise selection
- Develop greater confidence with previously avoided movements
New, severe, unexplained or worsening symptoms should be assessed by an appropriate healthcare professional before continuing.
Darn Good Gym does not diagnose or treat injuries and does not replace physiotherapy or medical care.
This service may suit you if…
- You are active but repeatedly experience training setbacks
- You are returning to the gym after an old injury
- You participate in recreational sport
- You want strength training to support your running, golf or racket sport
- You are unsure how quickly to increase your training
- You have completed physiotherapy and are cleared to exercise
- You want more structure than random workouts provide
- You want to train hard without making exhaustion the objective
- You value long-term participation more than short-term intensity
You do not need to be an athlete.
You simply need an activity you want your body to remain capable of doing.
What happens during the Free Movement Assessment?
Your first appointment is a conversation and an appropriate movement review — not a high-intensity workout. We will:
- Discuss your activity, training and injury history.
- Understand your current routine and recurring concerns.
- Identify the sport or activities you want to support.
- Observe a small number of relevant movements.
- Explain what we would initially prioritise.
- Outline how your training could progress.
- Determine whether Darn Good Gym is the right fit.
Where your symptoms require medical or physiotherapy assessment first, we will tell you.
Bring any relevant medical or physiotherapy guidance where appropriate.
Why train with Darn Good Gym?
More than 20 years of coaching experience
Your programme is guided by extensive experience working with different abilities, training histories and physical concerns.
Assessment before exercise
We do not begin by placing you into a standard workout.
Control before load
You first learn to perform movements with suitable control before resistance or complexity is increased.
Individual progression
Your training is adjusted according to how you move, respond and recover.
Preparation — not fear
We do not teach you to avoid every demanding movement. We help you build towards greater demands at an appropriate pace.
No exhaustion for its own sake
A difficult workout is not automatically a productive one. Training should create a useful stimulus that you can recover from and build upon.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can personal training guarantee that I will not get injured?→
No. No exercise programme can guarantee that an injury will never happen. Darn Good Gym focuses on appropriate exercise selection, movement control, physical preparation and gradual progression to support safer and more consistent training.
Can I train if I have an existing injury?→
It depends on the nature and current status of the injury. You may need medical or physiotherapy assessment and clearance before beginning or continuing strength training.
Is this the same as sports physiotherapy?→
No. Darn Good Gym provides personal training and strength coaching. We do not diagnose injuries, deliver medical rehabilitation or replace physiotherapy.
Do you provide sports-specific training?→
We can prepare general physical qualities relevant to your activity, such as strength, control, power and work capacity. We do not replace technical coaching for running, golf, racket sports or team sports.
Is strength training only useful for competitive athletes?→
No. Strength training can also support recreational athletes, weekend players and adults who simply want to remain capable of doing the activities they enjoy.
How often should I strength train?→
The appropriate frequency depends on your activity, current capacity, recovery and overall training schedule. Singapore's physical activity guidelines recommend muscle-strengthening activity at least twice each week for adults, but your individual programme should still reflect your circumstances. Build the capacity to keep doing what you enjoy
You do not need to train cautiously forever. You also do not need to prove your commitment by repeatedly pushing beyond what your body is prepared for.
You need a clear starting point, appropriate strength training and a progression process that helps you become more capable over time.
